| The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) has always employed innovative technology when it comes to medical care. Until 2003, however, this prestigious teaching institution depended on old-fashioned tools when it came to storing patient information - paper, file folders and shelves. And because various departments often needed immediate access to patient charts to perform their jobs effectively, an alternative to paper was clearly needed. Working with eWebHealth, the nation's oldest teaching hospital was able to scan its paper charts, then give authorized users simultaneous access to this historical patient information via the Internet. The results have been dramatic - HUP cut its HIM staff by 30 percent, freed up 2,000 square feet of space for revenue-generating activities, gained about $750,000 of additional reimbursements a year because of fewer denials, and significantly reduced the amount of time it takes to get invoices out the door. More recently HUP has cut its delinquency rate from over 50% to less than 10%; and they have been able to maintain a low delinquency rate year over year. |
